House Denbigh

Also known as the House of Volumes, this project painstakingly reconfigures a tired old house in the leafy northern suburbs of Joburg. Four new timber boxes are added to the first floor, gently resting on existing walls.

Through a series of extensive but calculated alterations, House Denbigh sees the significant alteration and addition to an existing home, bringing it up to date with contemporary South African living. The ground floor public areas are significantly reimagined and heavily edited with brick-and-mortar construction, while new private spaces are gently added above in a series of interconnected timber volumes.

The first-floor mass timber boxes consist of load-bearing CLT walls in both high-quality visible and high-performance non-visible formats. Roof and floor structures utilise Glulam rafters and beams. The light colours of the pine engineered timber products are complemented by the use of dark thermally treated bamboo on the interior and exterior. Like House Taylor and House Wiid, this project showcases rapid and efficient timber prefabrication, with the timber structure assembled in less than one week.
