Mass timber's environmental sustainability, low impact and biophilic qualities make it the ideal choice for projects in sensitive natural settings. These qualities are central to the new Wilderness Bisate lodge, which consists of three accommodation suites and a central lounge and dining area, all made of beautiful locally grown and produced engineered timber.
This complex but extraordinary project consists of four freestanding vaulted buildings. Singly curved glulam beams, connected with custom steel bracketry make up the primary structure and contribute to the unique architecture of the lodge. The structures consist of more than 50 unique beam geometries and close to 700 individual parts, all machined to millimetre accuracy. To ensure smooth construction in remote Rwanda, key areas of the buildings were mocked up at MTT’s facilities in Johannesburg. The entire timber structure was then packed and transported through six countries to the site.
