Stairs are an excellent application for high-precision prefabrication, which is possible with digitally designed and fabricated CLT. The mass timber staircase for MTT and the Sustainabuild group demonstrates how a complex three-dimensional circulation problem can be solved elegantly and beautifully.
To connect the ground and first floors at the MTT and Sustainabuild facilities at Sigma Road, the stair shaft and supporting walls were meticulously surveyed for digital design. Support points were identified on three walls, necessitating a partial cantilever. Despite the challenging structural conditions, slim CLT panels could be utilised. Ash hardwood treads were specified to accommodate the high traffic of the staircase. Finally, a slender steel balustrade is supported, which further integrates the stairs into the architecture of the office space.
